The History of Olive Farming in Australia

Australia’s love affair with olive farming began over two centuries ago, and it’s a story of determination, innovation, and exceptional flavour. At Sherman Foods, we’re proud to support this legacy by providing premium-quality Australian and imported olive oils, trusted by chefs and foodservice venues across the country.

A Journey Through Time

The roots of Australian olive farming trace back to the early 1800s, with the first trees likely arriving in New South Wales. By the 1830s, South Australia emerged as a leader in the industry, importing thousands of olive trees from France, Sicily, and Rio de Janeiro. The fertile Adelaide Parklands were soon home to over 3,000 trees, producing olive oil so exquisite that local company Stonyfell won Gold Medals in 1911 for oil exported to Italy.

Urban growth in the 1920s pushed groves to regional areas such as Dookie, Sunbury, and Wangaratta. Despite challenges, including competition from cheaper Mediterranean imports in the 1970s, Australian growers never lost their passion for producing high-quality olive oil.

A National Passion

In Western Australia, olive farming began in the 1860s, quickly gaining a reputation for premium oils. Norcia Monastery’s olive oil won silver at the prestigious Franco-British Exhibition in 1908. Today, Perth’s Parliament House proudly displays some of the oldest olive trees in the nation.

Queensland also played a part, with groves thriving in Brisbane and the Darling Downs by the late 1800s. Journals from the time, like Cultural Industries for Queensland (1883), highlight the pioneering spirit of local farmers who recognised the potential of olive trees in Australia’s climate.

A Modern Renaissance

Post-war immigrants brought renewed energy to Australia’s olive industry, purchasing land and planting groves. However, it wasn’t until the health benefits of olive oil gained global recognition that Australian olive oil truly found its place on the world stage.

Today, Australian olive oils are celebrated for their purity, exceptional taste, and premium quality. At Sherman Foods, we’re proud to play a role in this ongoing success story by connecting chefs and foodservice venues with authentic, top-tier olive oils.
